Communication Is Key by Benedictine University blogger Karly Sacco

Coming from someone that is in a committed relationship, I understand and relate completely with the fact that communication is essential. We as human beings need to communicate with our partners in order to maintain a long-lasting, healthy connection.

The list is endless as to why communication is key when it comes to loving your significant other, but let’s just name a few of the really important reasons.

-Respect-
I know you’re thinking it, Aretha Franklin was right when she sang about it. Respect is the number one element within a relationship. I am not just talking about respecting your partner, but most importantly I am referring to self-respect. There is no way you can respect other people if you cannot truly believe in yourself and know your limits. When you and your partner are being sexual, make sure that you remember to respect yourself before you do something you don’t want to do. If you show your partner that you care about your body and you respect yourself to a certain extent then the respect will become mutual and you will define a certain level of understating each other’s needs and desires. Communication doesn’t always have to be spoken; you can show your partner ways to respect you through your actions and emotions.

-No More Misunderstandings-
How many times have you gotten into an argument with someone because they thought you meant something completely different than what you would trying to communicate to them? If you and your partner have a clear understanding and are open with one another about everything in your lives, than there will be no more misunderstandings.Truly let them know how you are feeling, and the odds are there won’t be a misunderstanding and the problem can be resolved rationally.

-Fighting Is Kept to a Minimum-
The last but most defiantly not the least important point I am going to touch on is that communication between couples can keep their fighting to a minimal. Obviously every couple fights because of their own personal reasons that make each other mad, but communicating can help reduce the amount of fighting that happens on a daily basis. Tension builds in a household when a couple are mad at each other, but they don’t talk about it. They just let the issue linger on until they both can’t hold it in anymore and blow up over something so stupid that could have been fixed a week ago with a little bit of communication.

The Progression of Feminism- by Benedictine University blogger Karly

When I was growing up I always thought that  being a feminist was a negative thing. I thought that if you were a feminist, you hated all men and you only talked to women. That if you were a feminist you only were a part of things that women did. That was when I was younger, probably around ten or so. As the years went by I slowly realized what feminism truly is. It not a negative thing at all, actually it is the total opposite. Unfortunately, some people still think of feminism like my ten-year-old self did. Some people view the world of feminism in all the wrong ways. Being a feminist isn’t something that you should be afraid of. Just because you have a certain outlook on life doesn’t make you any different from anyone else. Now is a better time than ever for the world to shine a positive light on feminism. The movement has helped so many women feel strong, respected, and justified. I feel that most of the people that dislike the idea of feminism are men. I feel that men believe this movement is belittling them and taking away the idea of a “man’s role” in society. But one is no better than the other. Feminism is not taking anything away it is actually adding a positive outlook on today’s culture.

I think that being a feminist is cool. When you are a part of the feminist movement you want for men and women to have equal rights. However, there are extreme feminist that s
ometimes go a little overboard with their thoughts and that might be why feminism is looked at negatively sometimes. Those people that go a little too far with feminism just need to remember the initial reason and purpose, which is to create equality between men and women all over the world. There is not just one type of feminist. You become one with a reason behind it. If you feel strongly about a small portion or the whole idea of feminism, you will be different from the feminist next to you. You don’t have to be a woman to be a feminist. I feel that is a misperception that a lot of people have today.

The “He For She” movement, that actress Emma Watson brought a lot of attention to, is a perfect example of what feminism should be focusing on. We need to stray people away from the confusions of feminism and show them that now in the 21st century, men and women are coming together to create equality.

Lead The Way To Equality by blogger Karly Sacco - Benedictine University

It is unfortunate that the main leaders of women’s rights are women. I mean it makes sense for women to care more about what their gender is accomplishing in the world. But why shouldn’t more men get involved and show the rest of the world that there can be equality between the two genders? Some women feel limited when it comes to jobs and positions they can have because society has made it seem like these jobs are unacceptable for women to have. The main key to make a difference with this issue is to show that women do have power, and are deserving of respect.

Those in leadership positions hold the power to make a difference in women’s rights issues. Weather it is the issue of power, respect, equality, or as serious as sexual assaults, people listen to a leader that has something important to say about these topics. These leaders need to set examples by showing and not just telling. They need to help the people that have become victims of sexual assaults by giving them a safe environment to share their stories with the rest of the world. Hopefully these awful incidents will stop occurring so often once people hear what victims have gone though. It is up to the leaders to start a movement.

It can be as simple as starting more organizations so that people can start feeling more comfortable with the idea of women’s rights. Create social media pages for those who feel like they are a victim in any kind of way dealing with women’s rights so they can read and share stories and connect with those who have been dealing with the same struggles as them. Unfortunately, sexual assaults continue to happen, not just to women but to men as well. If more men in the leadership role were open and passionate about this issue than maybe more men that have been victims of sexual assault will seek help and comfort from groups lead by men. Men or women, getting sexually assaulted can have the same effect on the human body, mind, and emotional state.

Leaders need to show and not tell how to prevent sexual assaults so that the future can be a little brighter.

Society's Twisted View of A Woman's Body by Benedictine Blogger Karly

We have a very fast moving society in America. It is really easy for us to just go through the motions without any emotions on a day-to-day basis. People pass judgments all the time, so it is not that surprising that a big part of our culture is sex selling and women are at the core of it. In a way it may seem easier to the aggressor whom victimizes women because if she does not see herself as nothing more than an object then why should it matter what happens to her? However, a woman being viewed this way is not all society’s fault. Some girls regrettably make the name for the rest of us.

Yes sex does sell,  but if it was not for some of the girls that take their sexy image a little bit too far with risky clothing and promiscuous behavior, things might be a little better for the view of women.

It is depressing that some women do not even care if they are called objects because with the image that society has given women, they feel like “well maybe it is okay to feel worthless because people already view me that way.”

Many girls do not have any respect for their own body. The main blame goes on society and what it has done to the female population. But it cannot take all the blame. Girls need to stand up for themselves and speak up when they feel like they are being treated like trash. We need to stop society’s negative views of women and change them to look at women and think words like, power, leadership, feminism, strength, and respect.

The key is for us as women to better ourselves and for others to see that females are not just a sex object. Girls are not just something that can be easily thrown around. Some people will never fully change, but let’s give them a reason to stop and think; women are more than just a body.
